Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty in Perth

Rhinoplasty is a procedure that provides an opportunity to reshape the nose. This may be desired by men or women who are dissatisfied with the shape of their noses, whether due to natural genetics, deformities, or injury. If breathing difficulties are experienced, a septoplasty may be performed as well by changing the shape or the position of the septum.

Rhinoplasty Candidates

Most individuals who have Rhinoplasty surgery are unhappy with the way their noses look and want to change the proportions of their features. Other candidates for Rhinoplasty are individuals who have breathing difficulties or experience discomfort because of past nose injuries or structural abnormalities. Good candidates for this procedure are in overall good health, have realistic expectations and understand the potential risks involved with surgery.

A good candidate for Rhinoplasty may have the following:

  • A bulbous tip
  • Experience problems breathing because of irregularities with internal nose structure
  • A nose that’s asymmetrical due to injury
  • An off-centre or crooked nose
  • A drooping or extended nasal tip
  • A wide nose
  • A bump on the bridge of the nose
  • Pinched or flared nostrils

What does the operation involve?

Following sedation, small incisions are created on the columella or inside the nostrils. The skin will then be lifted to enter the cartilage and underlying bone. Dr Quinn can then graft or remove the necessary tissues. Generally, traditional methods are used to lessen the impact to the nearby tissues and at the same time work towards the wanted results. As soon as the nose adjustment process is completed, Dr Quinn will lay the skin down and close the incisions. After the incisions have been closed, a splint will be placed over the nose to secure the new contours. In some situations, nasal packing or pieces of gauze inside the nostrils are applied. This material will contribute to reducing bleeding and securing the septum and is usually taken off two to three days following surgery.

Is a hospital stay necessary?

Admission to hospital for an overnight stay is the choice of most of our patients; however, day surgery is possible in certain circumstances. Most patients have their surgery under a general anaesthetic although sedation and local anaesthetic can be used.

Recovery

Recovery takes around three to four weeks, although the final result may not be achieved for up to a year.

Tapes and a splint are applied to help reduce swelling. The splint remains in place for approximately seven days, and the nasal tapes are left for a few more days after the plaster has been removed. Activities are then gradually resumed, with activities requiring exertion or recreational pursuits not recommended for three to four weeks from the date of the operation.

Risks of Rhinoplasty

Patients should always research the possible complications of a surgery before they go ahead. The risks of rhinoplasty surgery include infection, difficulty breathing, anaesthesia reactions, bleeding, poor healing, scarring, and the possibility of needing further surgery. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Find more information here.

Due to the varying nature of patient needs and natural features, results and benefits will vary.

Is there an age limit for Rhinoplasty surgery?

There is no age limit for this surgery. But, to avoid anaesthesia complications and the risk of infection, you need to be in good health. Furthermore, you should have good skin elasticity.

Is it true that my nose continues to grow and will this influence the results of the surgery?

The nose doesn’t grow past the age of 16. However, over time the skin can stretch, and the tip of the nose may start to appear elongated. Rhinoplasty can target these issues, although it will not stop the ageing process.

Can you fix a broken nose if the injury happened years ago?

Ideally, treatment should take place soon after the broken nose happens. However, the damage can be corrected by re-adjusting and re-fracturing the bone.
